Just 40 minutes from Innsbruck, Lake Achensee is the largest lake in the Tirol and is surrounded by the beautiful mountain ranges of Karwendel and Rofan. It has been attracting tourists for generations - not just because it is a fantastic destination for relaxing and exploring the pretty lakeside villages, but also due to the Tyrolean shale oil or “Black gold” that is mined here and used for skin care products and massage treatments.
With a Mediterranean climate and clean, warm water that peaks around 27°C during the summer, Lake Achensee is very popular for watersports enthusiasts but also for hiking and mountain biking. You can take the Karwendel or Rofan cable cars where there are 500km of marked trails waiting to be explored.
