Traditional Villages

The Austrian ski resorts are known for their picture perfect cosy chalets especially in the smaller resorts that are off the radar to many skiers. These relatively unheard of villages typically share the same mountains and pistes as the heavy hitting resorts yet offer substantial savings on accommodation costs. Good examples are esorts such as Fugen in the Ziller Valley provides access to the Mayrhofen ski area and Galtur in the Paznaun valley lets you ski in Ischgl.

The resorts vary enormously from the quieter, charming and traditional to the more upbeat resorts such as Ischgl, Mayrhofen and St Anton where the apres-ski is legendary and kicks-off early afternoon on the slopes and finishes in the early hours of the morning!

Many of the ski resorts tend to be nestled close to each other in the numerous valleys around Salzburg and Tyrol creating some of the largest ski areas in the world although not all of the resorts are connected by lift. So, if you enjoy ski touring and exploring other ski resorts, you may be interested in visiting the Ziller Valley - home to many ski resorts including Mayrhofen, and the Arlberg region with the ever popular resort of St Anton.

Summer holidays in the mountain resorts

Many ski resorts are busier during the summer than in the ski season and the holiday homes for rent typically get booked up months in advance. The long sunny days can get surprisingly hot with temperatures often north of 30 degrees which means you have that Mediterranean climate at altitude giving the best of both worlds.

The mountains provide that perfect mix of being able to chill out by the pools or beaches on the shores of the many lakes and mix it up with some gentle hikes or adrenaline pumping mountain biking or summer skiing. Some of the most popular outdoor activities are:

  • Mountain biking
  • Hiking
  • Fishing
  • Swimming
  • Sailing
  • Kayaking
  • White water rafting
zell-am-see summer holidays

Summer skiing on the glaciers

Austria is also home to some of the finest summer skiing in the Alps where you can combine skiing in the morning with water sports in the afternoon. The Hintertux glacier, at the end of the Ziller valley just past Mayrhofen offers skiing almost every day of the year as does the Kitzsteinhorn glacier at Zell am See - Kaprun.

The other summer skiing resorts can be found at the Stubai Glacier and the Dachstein Glacier.

Our view on skiing in Austria

The Austrian Alps typically receive plenty of snow giving a long season despite their relative low levels when compared to the Swiss, Italian or French resort. Whether youre coming for some skiing, a summer holiday or any time of year for that matter, you won't be disappointed in the mountains with the vast amount of activities they have to offer on and off the slopes...
